The History of WoW!

WoW A few years ago a number of us “Church Ladies” got together to talk—as women do.   Our conversation centered around the demanding roles of our lives as wives, mothers, daughters, sisters, employees, bosses, and so forth, that resulted in our frantic, chronic busyness.   This question was posed repeatedly,   “In the midst of our daily not so “controlled chaos”, where is there even a mille-second of time for ‘Spiritual’ growth or renewal?”    In our attempt to answer that question, we felt a growing desire to serve the women of our parish, along with those from surrounding churches, who want and need to “taste and see the goodness of the Lord” – A better bite of the apple so to speak!      This simple desire to serve gave birth to what is now known as W0W – Women of the Word.   Our goal was and is to give you a “night out” with God to feed your Spirit!  Some prayer and conversation, God’s Words and insights, some laughter and tears, some music, a lesson or two…. no commitment…just come as you are and receive the Gift.   Well from then to now:   Our “giving team” has grown from 6 to 14 ladies ranging from the ages of  30 to over 70 years young, and our attendance has been over 150 ladies for every event—again with a similar age range.  Our audience is inter-denominational consisting of Christians, Catholics, Baptists and Jewish women.  All are welcome, whether attending for the first time or repeat “friend-ers”. We are currently in the planning stages of our 9th WoW event to be held on Friday, April 30th.  Each and every WoW has been a Godly adventure.  After much discernment, we pick a very simple word or phrase as our topic.  Inspired by the Holy Spirit, conversations, a current “hot topic”, Bible study, books and websites, we write skits and lessons, we choose songs, prayers, a video presentation or two, and somehow God makes it a great spirit-filled night.  Our last WOW was “Blessings.”  In preparation the WoW Team studied the Beatitudes, discussed and shared our experiences relating to “my cup runneth over,” “our blessing cup is a communion…” and “Is our cup half empty or half full” concepts.  This proved to be the foundation of what was indeed a “blessed” evening for all. Our evening focused on recognizing the blessings in our lives and seeing the blessings even when our lives seem “cursed”.  Each attendee was given a teacup with little note cards in it.  They were to use the cards to write down the blessings they’ve seen or may have overlooked lately.  We encouraged them to keep adding to their “Cup of Blessings” until it “runneth over,” and take the time to re-read their notes on those occasions when they need to be reminded of their blessings. If you are a woman in the parish who is looking for something more, trying to fill a void, is curious, or just plain bored on Friday nights, our next WOW is Friday, February 17.  The cost is just $10 and that includes dinner, dessert, and an evening of fine entertainment!  Join us!  Join God! And come be a Woman of the Word!
