Doing What He Could May 9, 2010

I read recently about an eleven year old boy, Trevor Ferrell, from Philadelphia, who went into the city one day with his parents. In the course of the day, Trevor came upon a homeless man in the street, sleeping. Trevor was absolutely shocked that this man had no home, no bed or place to sleep. That night, as Trevor was trying to sleep, he knew he had to do something. The next day he gathered up his own sheets and blanket and pillow and put them in a bag. He asked his parents to drive him into the city, where he gave his  bedding to the first homeless person he saw. Now that in itself was a remarkable act of kindness, but the story doesn’t end there. It happened that Trevor’s act of kindness became known to others. Struck by his simple gesture, some folks from area churches and a few local businesses began to make some contributions. Soon medical supplies got donated, some social services and legal aid folks volunteered to help out so that within a year of Trevor’s simple act of kindness, a shelter for the homeless, named “Trevor’s Place”, was opened. All of this came about because one eleven year old boy was moved to respond to someone in need. Isn’t that a great story? It certainly can remind us that every act of kindness is important in God’s kingdom and that every gesture made out of love for others bears great fruit. So often we may think that the world’s problems are so big that our meager efforts can’t do much to make a difference. I think Trevor Ferrell would disagree. He did what he thought he could, and good things began to happen. What do you think might happen if you stepped out and did what you could to care for someone in need?
