November 3, 2008

Attendees:  Rose Braun, Matt Bolton, Tate Cooper, Chris Gebhardt, Kevin Kohls, Debbie Meinhardt, Claudia Miller, Cindy Muron, Jane Mueninghoff, Joan Siebenick, Ray Sousa, Fr. Mark Burger, Fr. Don West, Scott Steinke (guest), and Mary Ann Lampe (scribe).

Preliminaries:  The Council Meeting opened with the Pastoral Council prayer at 7:00 pm.  The reflection was led by Jane Mueninghoff.

Agenda Items:

1)  Approval of minutes from October meeting – all   The minutes were approved as written.

2)  Pastoral Associate – Scott Steinke
a)    Overview of Current Topics   Scott is the Director of the Liturgy.  As such, Scott has a long list of duties including coordinating liturgical ministers, lectors, liturgy of the word with children, etc.  He is the wedding facilitator, orders liturgical supplies, funeral coordinator, worship commission, CHRP, staff liaison, etc.  He leads Stephen Ministers of which there are twenty-five.  Scott – we have one group of Stephen Ministers from St. John’s, St. Max, St. Susannah, and Good Shepherd for bereavement follow-up.  If need be, I can refer to one of these parishes or they to us.  Anyone who comes for counseling, we have support for that.  Scott is in charge of the audio/video for all buildings.

b)    Issues/Needs/Challenges

c)    Feedback  Debbie- How many will be trained as videographers?  Scott- as many as wish.  Can no longer do cassette tapes or video cassettes, only DVD’s and CD’s.  Debbie – can we do this for weddings?  Fr. Mark – no, the couple must provide for this themselves.  Rose – where are we on audio?  We cannot hear clearly from the choir space.  Scott – the system is very complicated; a lot has to do with the church itself.  Education on use of the microphone helps some.  All churches have some problems.

Chris – we had a directory about 10 years ago, can we do this, again?  Fr. Mark – We did one in 2001 and are currently looking at doing it again.

Jane – how many people are partnered with Stephen Ministers?  Scott- about 10-15.  We are considering expanding to hospice.  Jane – if you’re looking into hospice, nursing homes, etc., Jewish Hospital’s bone marrow unit could use volunteers.  Patients are there for extended periods and appreciate someone to stop by just to say “hello”.

3)    Pastoral Associate Ministry Project – Jane Mueninghoff  I am finishing my Masters in Lay Pastoral Ministry at the Athenaeum.  My project is a three hour spiritual retreat for adult liturgical ministers. I am hoping to have some group prayers, personal reflection, and group sharing.  In my observation, there is room for education of liturgical ministers to understand the importance of their ministries and reaffirm our mission.  I am hoping to have this retreat in the spring on a Saturday from 9-12 followed by lunch for all adult liturgical ministers.  I am currently working on identifying people who would like to help set this up.  We have 370 liturgical ministers.

I would like you (PC) to pray for the success of the retreat and to help communicate to other ministers.  Joan, Debbie, Rose and Tate volunteered to help with setting up the retreat.  I have to write up a formal proposal and identify needs.  I will have a planning meeting with those of you (PC) who wish to help.

4)    January Retreat Details – all  Joan volunteered her home for the Saturday, January 10, 2009 retreat.  It was suggested that Sister Judy (Venice Pizza) could cater.  Fr. Mark conducts the retreat finishing with Mass and adjourns around 3-3:30.

It was decided not to hold a meeting in December, to go out to eat instead.  Someone asked if there are more families for baskets this Christmas.  No, but we have some very large families this year.

5)    Fr. Mark’s Comments  As you know, we have a new Archbishop coadjutor, Dennis Schnurr.  We will be down to 100 pastors in 2010.  We will have pastoral regions.

I am doing the Advent retreat at Mass this year.  The theme is “Walking with Mary in the dark”  and “Walking with Mary the day after” (as an older woman).

Someone brought up the subject of appropriate dress for Lectors.  Debbie will e-mail Scott about addressing this with Lectors.

6)    Adjournment and Closing Prayer of Thanksgiving – Tate Cooper  Tate led the closing prayer and we adjourned at 8:00 pm.

Next Meeting:  Monday, January 5, 2009
